California

Associate Clinical Social Workers must accrue a total of 3000 hours over 104 weeks and may be supervised by an LMFT, LCSW, LPCC, Licensed Psychologist, Licensed Physician, or LEP. A minimum of 1700 hours and 13 weeks must be supervised by an LCSW.

Associate Marriage and Family Therapists have similar requirements but there is no minimum number of hours that must be supervised by an LMFT.

For both ASWs and AMFTs, a maximum of 1200 hours may be supervised by an LEP.

Washington

Clinical Social Work Associates must accrue 3000 hours of supervised, post-graduate experience per the Washington Department of Health’s regulations. Associates must have a minimum of 1000 direct client contact hours and 100 supervision hours with an LICSW or equally licensed mental health professional.

Of the 100 supervision hours, 70 hours must be with a LICSW and 60 must be one-on-one supervision. The remaining hours may be accrued through one-on-one or group supervision.

Marriage and Family Therapy Associates must also accrue 3000 hours of supervised experience with 200 of those hours consisting of direct supervision with a qualified supervisor. Of those 200 hours, a minimum of 100 must be with a LMFT who has a minimum of 5 years of experience and the other 100 hours may be with an equally licensed mental health professional.

Oregon

Clinical Social Work Associates must accrue 3500 hours of supervised clinical experience. Of those 3500 hours, 2000 hours must be direct client contact hours with 100 supervision hours being accrued over no fewer than 24 months. A minimum of 50 supervision hours must be one-on-one supervision.

Relevant Steps will begin offering clinical supervision to Marriage and Family Therapist Associates in January 2026.
